Metal Fabrication Workshop — Why Source Machines from Germany?
The Metallbau (metal fabrication) sector is one of Germany's largest trade segments, with over 38,000 registered firms. Bending — Press Brake and Plate Roll
The press brake (Abkantpresse) is the second heart of a metalwork shop:

Watch out for press brakes from the 1990s: they may lack guards compliant with the current Machinery Directive. Retrofitting a light curtain (e.g., Fiessler AKAS) costs 2,000-4,000 EUR — without it, the Polish Labour Inspectorate (PIP) may bar the machine from operation.
Welding and Material Preparation
The welding bay is a separate zone, but without it a metalwork shop is incomplete:
- MIG/MAG welder 400A — Fronius TransSteel, EWM Taurus, Lorch S-series. Used 1,200-3,500 EUR
- TIG welder DC/AC — for stainless steel and aluminium. Fronius MagicWave, EWM Tetrix. Used 1,500-4,000 EUR

- Stationary belt grinder — Fein, Metabo. Deburring and finishing. Used 300-800 EUR
- Screw compressor 1000 l/min — powering the plasma table and pneumatic tools. Atlas Copco, Kaeser. Used 2,500-5,000 EUR
Total cost of basic metalwork shop equipment from Germany: 30,000-60,000 EUR. Comparable new equipment: 90,000-180,000 EUR.
Infrastructure — Beyond the Machines
Machines are half the equation. The other half is infrastructure:
- Overhead crane 3.2-5 t — essential for handling sheet and assemblies. Demag, Abus, Stahl. Used 3,000-8,000 EUR (excluding installation)
- Modular welding table — Siegmund, Demmeler, GPPH. 28 mm hole grid. Used 2,000-6,000 EUR

- Electrical installation — CNC machines require stable 400V/32-63A supply. Adaptation cost: 3,000-8,000 PLN

Common Pitfalls When Buying Metalworking Machines
What to watch for:
- Guillotine shears with cracked blades — blade replacement at 3000 mm costs 1,500-3,000 EUR. Inspect the cutting edge
- Press brakes without crowning — older models bend sheet with a "belly" in the centre. Crowning (Bombierung) is necessary above 2000 mm working length
- Plate rolls with roller play — indicates worn bearings. Replacement cost: 2,000-5,000 EUR
- Welders without calibration certificate — EN ISO 17662 requires regular calibration. Without it, welds may fail NDT
- Overhead cranes without UDT documentation — after installation in Poland, a UDT inspection (Category II or III) is required
