Woodworking Machines from Germany — Why It Pays Off
Germany has over 40,000 joinery workshops (Tischlereien) — the largest market in Europe. Machinery is replaced every 10-15 years, creating a constant supply of used machines from Homag, Altendorf, Weeke, IMA, Brandt, and Holzher in excellent technical condition.
For Polish joineries, the price difference is enormous. A Homag KAL 310 edge bander (2016 model) costs 12,000-18,000 EUR in Germany. The new equivalent: over 45,000 EUR. Hutnia, as your procurement agent, verifies technical condition, throughput (metres of edge banded), and equipment completeness — before you place an offer.
Panel Saw — the Starting Point of Every Joinery
The panel saw (Formatkreissaege) is machine number one:
- Altendorf F45 — the benchmark panel saw in Europe. Used (2012-2018) 4,000-8,000 EUR. New 15,000+ EUR
- Martin T75 — premium class, cast-iron guide. Used 6,000-12,000 EUR
- Felder K 700 S — good value for money. Used 3,000-6,000 EUR
- SCM Si 400 — Italian alternative, popular in Poland. Used 2,500-5,000 EUR
What to check: cutting accuracy (deviation <0.1 mm/m), condition of the sliding table (guides, rollers), condition of blade and spindle. Hutnia requests a cutting sample — a photo of the cut edge in melamine board says more than any seller's claim.
Edge Bander — the Heart of Furniture Production
Without an edge banding machine, there is no furniture manufacturing:
- Homag KAL 310/330 — industry standard. Units: pre-milling, PUR/EVA gluing, pressure zone, flush trimming, scraper, buffing. Used 8,000-18,000 EUR
- IMA Novimat — Homag competitor, comparable class. Used 6,000-15,000 EUR
- Brandt/Ambition (now Homag) — budget models. Used 4,000-10,000 EUR
- Holzher 1438 — compact, for smaller workshops. Used 3,000-7,000 EUR
Key questions when buying used:
- Glue type — PUR or EVA? PUR costs more but resists moisture (kitchens, bathrooms). PUR unit adds 3,000-5,000 EUR
- Edge thickness — 0.4-3 mm or 0.4-8 mm? Thicker edges need a stronger trimming unit
- Metre counter — like the odometer on a car. Above 500,000 m, expect an aggregate overhaul
- Pressure roller condition — rubber or silicone. Worn rollers mean poorly bonded edges
CNC Machining Centre — When Does It Pay?
A CNC machining centre is an investment for series production:
- Weeke/Homag BMG 311 — 3-axis, console table. Used 15,000-35,000 EUR. New 80,000+ EUR
- Biesse Rover A — Italian alternative, popular in Poland. Used 12,000-30,000 EUR
- SCM Morbidelli — compact, good starter. Used 10,000-25,000 EUR
- Holzher Dynestic — nesting (cutting from full panels). Used 20,000-45,000 EUR
When does CNC make sense? Above 50 cabinet carcasses per month or with repeating elements that need drill patterns. Below that threshold, a multi-spindle boring machine (Hettich, Blum) at 3,000-8,000 EUR is cheaper and faster.
Note: CNC centres require current control software. A WoodWOP licence (Homag) costs 1,500-3,000 EUR/year. Hutnia checks licence status and CAD/CAM compatibility before making a recommendation.
Dust Extraction and Spray Booth — Mandatory Infrastructure
Woodworking machines produce enormous amounts of dust. Without extraction, you will not pass a PIP (Polish Labour Inspectorate) audit:
- Central extraction system — Schuko, Nestro, Al-Ko. 3,000-6,000 m3/h for 3-5 machines. Used 2,000-5,000 EUR
- Bag/cartridge filter — mandatory with CNC (MDF dust is carcinogenic — class M). Used 1,500-4,000 EUR
- Spray booth — if you do in-house finishing. Saico, USI Italia, Nova Verta. Used 3,000-10,000 EUR
- Compressor — for spray guns and pneumatics. Atlas Copco, Kaeser. Used 1,500-3,000 EUR
Total cost of a basic joinery setup from Germany (saw + edge bander + boring machine + extraction): 20,000-40,000 EUR. With CNC: 40,000-80,000 EUR. Comparable new equipment: 60,000-200,000 EUR.
Common Pitfalls When Buying Joinery Machines
The most frequent problems:
- Edge banders with worn trimming units — diamond cutter replacement costs 1,200-2,500 EUR each. Check trimming quality on a sample
- Panel saws with spindle play — means worn spindle bearings. Refurbishment: 800-2,000 EUR
- CNC with outdated controls — Fanuc, Siemens, Heidenhain. A controller upgrade can cost more than the machine itself
- Extraction systems without ATEX certification — wood dust is explosive. Ex zones require compliant equipment
- Machines without CE guards — older models (pre-2000) may lack required safety devices. Retrofitting: 500-2,000 EUR
Hutnia verifies each of these points as part of the standard technical inspection.
